The following strategy is designed for winter storage of a Tiffin Allegro outdoors -- without winterizing.
Requirements:
A moderate winter climate. Extended periods of sub-freezing weather will use up too much propane to make this approach practical.
Shore power (15 amp circuit is sufficient)
Generator with auto-start at low voltage
Inverter powering all receptacles mentioned below
WiFi hotspot on your mobile phone carrier's data plan (e.g., Verizon Jetpack)
Netatmo weather station, set up with connection to WiFi hotspot
Piper NV security system or a webcam alternative, set up with connection to WiFi hotspot
Steps:
Connect motorhome to shore power, and set inverter shore power control to the proper current input (e.g., 15 amps)
Plug in WiFi hotspot, and make sure it is located so that it is getting a good cellular signal
Place the indoor Netatmo temperature sensor module in the living room of the coach and plug in.
Place the remote Netatmo temperature sensor module in the wet bay. Battery status can be checked in the smartphone app (see Settings).
Place Piper NV in kitchen and plug in. Aim camera at interior propane gauge (1" distance) and leave panel lights on.
Turn propane furnace on (Gas Heat setting on kitchen thermostat) with the thermostat set to 41 degrees.
Keep hot water heater on (gas heat setting only).
Keep the residential refrigerator on but turn the ice maker off.
Enable Auto Generator Start (at 12.0 V) without Quiet Time.
Open cabinet doors under bathroom and kitchen sinks so that warm air can circulate to plumbing. Also open any cabinets with appliances that might have water in them (e.g., coffeemaker, Waterpik, etc.).
Monitoring:
Real-time remote monitoring of both coach and wet bay temperatures is possible with the Netatmo smartphone app. Set custom smartphone notifications: 40 F for coach sensor, 35 F for bay sensor, more notifications for lower temps as desired.
Real-time remote camera view of propane and coach battery status is possible with the Piper smartphone app. Set to an “armed” mode if you want to have phone call notification of coach temperature drop (e.g., set to 40 F).
